As our mattress goes, so goes our day. With this exaggeration we could point out how immensely important it is to have a well-chosen mattress that isn’t worn out. Don’t know what condition yours is in? In this blog we’ll look at how to find out and advise you on which criteria to focus on when choosing a new mattress.

How do you feel when you wake up

None of us wants to feel tired, stiff and sore or struggle with back pain in the morning. If you experience these problems only briefly or occasionally, it may be nothing serious. Everyone has a bad night’s sleep from time to time. Morning pain in the back or other parts of the body, if you don’t have a health problem, may be caused, for example, by an unsuitable sleeping position. It’s different if you experience these problems over a long period. Then it’s time to ask yourself, what condition your mattress is in and whether it suits your needs.

Choose to fit you

Our body proportions, weight, age, gender and any health problems or limitations should serve as a compass when determining the criteria for a suitable mattress. In general, men and heavier people should have a firmer mattress, while for women and lighter people the opposite is true. It’s also worth considering, the position you sleep in most often: if you sleep on your back or stomach, choose a firmer model; if you sleep on your side, a softer type will suit you better. Children need a firmer mattress of medium firmness for healthy growth and proper development. Seniors, on the other hand, will be better suited to softer, more elastic mattresses that are comfortable for them.

Specific types of mattresses are orthopedic and medical. It’s important to know the difference between them. An orthopedic mattress provides support for the entire musculoskeletal system and ideal weight distribution. A medical mattress is suitable for people who are bedridden long-term and for allergy sufferers. Before buying, ask the manufacturer whether its products have certificates that should attest to their quality.

A topper as an alternative

Your mattress may be fairly new and not worn out, but its properties don’t suit you. For example, when buying one large mattress for a double bed, the problem may be that each partner needs a different level of firmness. A topper can be the ideal solution. It’s used to change the firmness of a mattress or to refresh an old one. A topper is an affordable solution, and another advantage is that it provides hygienic protection for the mattress.

The life cycle of a mattress

Every mattress, when purchased, has certain properties: it has a certain firmness and provides a certain level of support and adaptability for our comfort. It may be orthopedic, with antibacterial or anti-allergy treatment, and so on. But as the years of sleeping on it pass, it gradually loses these properties and stops providing the necessary support for our spine and the rest of the body. In addition, there is also the important hygiene aspect. After a few years, a mattress contains large amounts of dust, bacteria, dust mites, dead skin and sweat.

You may feel that your current mattress isn’t too worn out yet, that you sleep well on it and don’t need to replace it. The truth, however, is that after 5 to 8 years of regular use it’s time to replace it.

If this article has made you realize your mattress is ready to retire and you need a new one, don’t despair and do it as soon as possible. This investment in your health and a better life will pay off many times over. After all, as the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer said: “Health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing.”
